It’s More Fun Than Running / Walking Alone !

Thank you for considering running or walking in our Knights Challenge 5k.   We hope that you will have fun while helping us raise funds for our very worthwhile cause – feeding the hungry of Hanover Township.

We want you to have the most fun on race day, so we’ve introduced Teams this year so that you can partner with family, friends, or co-workers to cheer each other on to the finish line.  Running with a friend (or a group!) really is so much more fun than running alone. When you register, or anytime after that, you can create a team on our registration site.

Once the race is over, a team is there to celebrate, and relax after the accomplishments of the day. Plus, they’ll keep people going and motivate them to finish strong if they’re starting to feel sluggish mid-race.

Need Encouragement ?

Before the race even starts, a team is a built-in training support system. A dedicated team will spend some time running together before the race starts, getting to know each member’s quirks and pace. An individual can push off or ignore scheduled training runs, but a team won’t let them get away with skipping them! Besides support, team members also make for great accountability partners, and will help members to be completely prepared come race day.

Share Team Page to Get Pledges

This year besides awarding an overall male and female winner along with first, second, and third place finishers in each age category (male & female) we will be awarding a prize to the Team that raises the most donations.   It’s easy for you to raise pledges via our registration page.   Once you’ve registered, anyone can donate to support either an individual or a team.

As a team, you’ll be able to customize your own page – upload an image, set a goal, and track your progress.   Share that link on social media, via email, or simply pass it along on a flyer, to gain support for your team.   You can create your own t-shirts if you like (we can provide you with logo if you want to incorporate that into your design).   Together we can make this year’s Knights Challenge the largest to date.  If you need any help forming a team just contact us at info@kofc12801.org.

Hanover Township Food Pantry Food Distribution

If you’ve run or walked in past Knights Challenge 5k events, you might recognize this parking lot.  It is St. John the Evangelist’s parking lot.   Hanover Township Food Pantry, in conjunction with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, was at St. Johns on June 26th distributing food to needy right in our own neighborhood.   Several of the Knights of Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary were on hand to help with the distribution.  There were 75 families that received food at this distribution.

This is Why we Host the Knights Challenge 5k

The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

Times haven’t changed  much since 1882.  There are still families in need, and the Knights of Columbus is there to render assistance.   We have partnered with Hanover Township Food Pantry for many years to help provide food to families in need.  This is our 5th Annual Knights Challenge 5K which benefits the food pantry directly.

Hanover Township Food Pantry helps more than 800 families each month.  Keeping their shelves full is always a struggle, but by generous support from the community, they are able to continue their mission of caring for those families.  Through your generosity, by sponsoring, participating in the Knights Challenge, or making a monetary donation, Mary’s Millennium Council is able to continue playing our role in serving the community.

Fathers Day- save the date
Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.

We wish all the Fathers a Happy Fathers Day 2018.   We ask you to consider bringing your family to our event or finding some other way to help.   Once again we are offering discounts for families that register for the race and even having an event for young children to participate in a kids dash, which is tailored to their age bracket.   Please share this with friends, families, and companies.  We are still in need of sponsors for the event as well as teams that will help raise additional funds.   Thank you for your consideration and assistance in Feeding God’s Children in Need.

2018 Knights Challenge

Planning Meeting

6:30 – 8:30 PM

St. John’s Parish Office

Conference Room A

We are less than five months away from our Fifth Annual Knights Challenge 5K Run / Walk / Kids Dash which benefits the Hanover Township Food Pantry.  This website has been updated with sponsor forms, registration forms, and links to our online registration site.  Since this is our fifth year holding this event, five months of planning seems appropriate.  Fortunately, we have several veterans at the helm organizing the event, including Bill Henderson, Race Director,  Gary Pappin, Webmaster, and Race Time, who helps us with online registration and event day timing / race results.

It takes a village to have a successful event.  We work closely with Hanover Township Food Pantry, St. John the Evangelist Church, our Ladies Auxiliary, and the Village of Streamwood to coordinate the event.  Several volunteers are needed to help plan the event, as well as assist on race day.   We invite our fellow Brother Knights from other councils to also get involved this year.   We will be happy to attend one of your council meetings to discuss how we can work together for this great charitable cause.

We are open to suggestions from participants in past years’ 5K races as well.   Together we can help Feed His Flock.

Planning for

5th Annual Knights Challenge
Has Officially Begun

We’ve gotten approval from St. John’s parish to hold our fifth annual Knights Challenge on Saturday, October 6, 2018 starting at 8:30 AM.  We will be working with Race Time once again for online registration and race day support.  Once the online registration page has been created, we’ll update our website with the direct link.   Meanwhile, registration is open at the Parish Office or by mail by completing the Registration Form.

Last year we introduced a Kids Fun Dash, which followed the main Knights Challenge 5k Run / Walk. It was a huge success – the kids just loved having their very own race. We hope that there will be even more participants this year making the Knights Challenge a family affair. What better way to instill charity into the lives of our children than be helping others together as a family?

We race so that others may be fed. The proceeds from this event supports the Hanover Township Food Pantry. Even before we started the Knights Challenge races five years ago, Mary’s Millennium Council has supported the good works done by Hanover Township. Your participation in the Knights Challenge helps us to expand our financial support.

Our website has been updated with more information about this year’s event. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter and follow us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up to date as our planning continues. We are also looking for sponsors to help defray our costs, so please consider helping in that capacity or spreading the word to friends, families, and businesses you frequent. Thank you in advance for your support.

Race Day Reflections

Fourth Annual Knights Challenge is History

After weeks of gorgeous weekends, with above normal temperatures, the day before the race brought rain to the area.  As Saturday morning dawned, organizers of the Knights Challenge anxiously looked out their windows to see if it was raining.  Fortunately, it was not.  The skies were overcast, and there were typical fall temperatures, but the weather forecast had been updated with heavy rain no longer anticipated until perhaps later in the afternoon.

As the first runners showed up at St. John’s Parish Center to sign-in, the sun was actually starting to peak out from behind the clouds.   Everyone sighed in relief, as we now expected the last minute onsite registrations would actually come to fruition.

By race time we had 50 runners / walkers present – there are always some participants that preregister that are unable to actually attend the event.  There was a gentle breeze blowing, and the mix of clouds and sun produced close to perfect conditions for participants.  About half-way through the race, there were a couple periods of light misting, but for the most part, conditions couldn’t have been better.  God must have been shining down on all for the work being done to feed the hungry.

Brother Knight Dan Klein was the first male runner to cross the finish line at 20:45.6.  Colleen Clesen, from St. Charles, was the first female to cross the finish line at 24:40.2.    Congratulations to both of them for winning the overall trophies.

We’d like to thank all the Sponsors, Volunteers, and Participants for making our 4th annual 5K a success.   There are too many people to thank in this article, but we will devote another post to that topic.   For those that participated, watch our website, twitter feed, and Facebook page for updates.   The official results will be posted by Race Time, but if you can’t wait for those to be on their site, contact us with your name and/or bib number and we can provide you with your results.

We will be posting pictures from the race as well as more details about race day.  Sign up for our newsletter if you would like to receive updates.   We hope that you enjoyed this year’s Knights Challenge and that you’ll be back next year, perhaps with a friend or family member.  Together we have supported a worthy cause, the Hanover Township Food Pantry, who would also like to express their appreciation.

Thank you to all - click for more details
