Food Pantry Needs Our Help

Mary’s Millennium Knights & Ladies

Mobilize to Help Hanover Township Food Pantry

Across the nation, Knights of Columbus councils have answered the call to “Leave No Neighbor Behind” during this Covid-19 pandemic crisis. As you know, we support the Hanover Township Food Pantry in our council and parish throughout the year. With the cancellation of activities and masses, the monthly food drives have not occurred. The food pantry counts on those donations to supplement the purchasing that they do with funds from other sources.

We have two events going on during the month of May to come to their rescue and meet their immediate needs. We’ve scheduled a Virtual 5k Run / Walk which can be completed from May 1 – June 20. To participate, click on the link below to be taken to our dedicated registration page for the event.

There are several different registration options (with and without swag). Discounts are available for families, students, and seniors as well. Swag (t-shirs and participation ribbons) as well as medals for 5k participants that upload their results, will be presented at a later date when we are able to reopen our facilities.

After registering you then RUN a 5K or WALK (5k or less) any time between now and June 20th noon. Choose your route: take to the treadmill, run in your neighborhood, or follow the suggested course map (our certified course) Feel free to run a loop beginning at any point and proceeding in either direction. Capture your results using your phone or manual entry.

We encourage individuals to form teams and solicit donations to support the food pantry. 100% of proceeds, less convenience fees charged online, will benefit the Hanover Township Food Pantry. Depending on the purchasing ability of the pantry (there are limits) we will either provide the funds to them directly or purchase food and deliver to the food pantry.

Ladies Auxiliary Helping to
Stock Food Shelves Now

We have been in contact with the Hanover Township Food Pantry and have discovered that the pantry is in dire need. Unfortunately, because of the purchasing limits, they are asking for food donations instead of monetary donations. Right now they just aren’t able to keep enough food on the shelves.

St. John’s School is distributing school lunches to our parish families in Kyle Hall three days a week through May 15th.   We have setup a bin for food donations there and will be monitoring it and delivering to the food pantry.

If you are able, we are asking for donations to be brought to St. John the Evangelist School Kyle Hall (next to main school entrance on Parkside Circle) to help our community.  If these times don’t work for you, please email info@kofc12801.org and mention that you have food donations. Someone will be in contact with you to make other arrangements.

How does a virtual 5k work?  You run a 5k or walk (5k or less) any time between now and June 20th at noon.  Choose your route: take to the treadmill, run in your neighborhood, or follow the suggested course map — feel free to run a loop beginning at any point and proceeding in either direction.  Capture your results with our phone app or manually update them on our race website.  Awards will be announced on June 20 at 5 PM on our website (or after all results have been tallied).

We have discounted rates for early registration (now thru May 15th), seniors, kids under 15, and families. You can decide if you want the race swag (t-shirt and finisher ribbon) or not.  In addition, 5k participants will be eligible for medals.  Pickup for swag and awards will be at St. John’s on a date to be determined. Complete details are available on our registration page.

The event is open to anyone in the United States.  Race swag and awards will be mailed to those participants at the same time local distribution is available.  We encourage fund-raising, available to individuals or teams, and will recognize our top individuals and teams.   Join the fun but please follow safe-distancing and other local guidelines. Final Prep 2019 Knights Challenge

Online Registration is now CLOSED – Register using Form

Six years ago Mary’s Millennium Council #12801 Knights of Columbus, Streamwood, IL, was looking for a creative way to increase their yearly assistance to the Hanover Township Food Pantry.  Jim Kaltinger, an avid runner, approached the council with his idea about conducting a 5K race.   As an avid runner, he knew something about what was involved, but that challenge didn’t stop him from suggesting we sponsor an event.  The council approved the idea overwhelmingly and we embarked on a journey which culminated in October 2014 with a successful event.

Final preparations are underway for the sixth annual Knights Challenge 5K Run/Walk which will be held October 5, 2019, starting at 8:30 AM.  The event, sponsored by the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary in conjunction with St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish, located at 300 N. Park Blvd., Streamwood, benefits the Hanover Township Food Pantry.   The race course is USATF certified #IL-14131-JW.

We’ve expanded two years ago, including a Kids Fun Dash for children ages 3-10.   At the conclusion of the main event (approximately 9:30 AM), registered Kiddies will have their very own race for fun.   The race will start in the parking lot and end at the same finish line as the 5K race.   All children will receive a special t-shirt and participation ribbon.  Refreshments and awards will follow the events.

Medals will be presented to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female winners in each five year age category. In addition, the overall male and female winners will also receive special awards.   A technical T-shirt will be given to all pre-registered participants.

We are still looking for runners / walkers and children for the Dash.  Do you know someone that likes to race?

Online registration is still open (click here).  Registrations are also being accepted by mail or in person at St. John’s Parish Office.  (Download Registration Form Here).  We will also take registration the day of the event from 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Parish Center.    There is special pricing for families of 3 or more, students, and Fun Dash participants.  Thank you for your support.

Labor Day Promo

0 News No Comments

The sixth annual Knights Challenge 5K Run / Walk / Kids Fun Dash is just a little over a month away as we celebrate this Labor Day holiday. Despite working hard, many families in the Hanover Township area are unable to put enough food on the table for their families, and they turn to the generosity of people like you to help them.

The Knights of Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary of Mary’s Millennium Council of Streamwood has been a supporter of the Hanover Township Food Pantry even before we started this 5K event. We’d collect food monthly, and provide financial assistance, but with over 700 families to feed monthly, that just wasn’t enough. That is why we started this race six years ago.

There are several ways you can help. Register to run or walk in the event. Share information about the 5k with friends, coworkers, and family. Select a team or individual that is registered already, and donate to support them. If you have a business, you could be a sponsor and help us promote the event. Browse our website to learn more about the event or contact us at info@kofc12801.org

Thank you for your support.  Please register today.  It’s easy to register Online or by using our Registration Form.

Last year’s Knights Challenge may be completed, but the need to feed hungry of Hanover Township remains.   For many years, Mary’s Millennium has made the Hanover Township Food Pantry one of their primary charitable causes.   Six years ago, we introduced the Knights Challenge 5k in order to step up our ability to support this worthy cause.   Through the help of many participants and sponsors, we have been able to donate thousands of dollars to the food pantry.   There is still much more to be done to feed the hungry.

Why We Host Knights Challenge 5K

The picture above was taken at St. John the Evangelist parking lot on July 2nd. That morning, Hanover Township Food Pantry was onsite with a mobile food truck to distribute food to needy families. This was made possible by donations from the Ladies Auxiliary of Mary’s Millennium Knights of Columbus. Several members of the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary joined forces with Hanover Township and other volunteers to distribute the food to 90 families.

This was an extra event for those families. The food pantry feeds over 700 families each month. Cash donations go a long way to restock shelves and make mobile truck distribution events like this possible. The pantry is able to purchase food for pennies on the dollar.

We need Your Help!  Sign up today to run or walk in our 6th Annual Knights Challenge.  There are discounted rates for families, students, and teams.  Ask your coworkers, family, and friends to sponsor your participation as well.  Together we can feed the hungry of Hanover Township.

2018 Overall Winners

And The Winners Are …

The Needy Families of Hanover Township serviced by the Food Pantry month after month thanks to donations of food and money.   Mary’s Millennium Council has been a proud sponsor of the Food Pantry for years.   Five years ago, we decided to step up our game and invited the community to assist us by participating in the annual Knights Challenge 5k Run / Walk / Kids Fun Dash.  Year after year, runners and walkers have come from near and far to join us in our quest to help stamp out hunger.   Once again, the public did not disappoint us.

God was shining down on our race today.  When we started marking the course this morning, there were showers in the area, but by race time, the skies had cleared and the rains had stopped.  As the race progressed, the skies turned cloudy, but still no rain.  It was a comfortable temperature, but a bit humid.   No worries, we had plenty of water on hand and of course the Streamwood Fire Department was standing by in case anyone needed assistance.  Fortunately they sat idle the whole time.

At the conclusion of the main race, several youngsters participated in the Kids Fun Dash.  This is the second year we’ve done that dash and we hope that word spreads so that more kids participate next year.  They have a great time and take home a t-shirt and ribbon to show their support for the Hanover Township Food Pantry.

Pictured above are the overall male and female winners from this year’s event.   Our own Brother Knight Dan Klein led the males, crossing the finish line at 22:13.5, and Colleen Clessen was the first female to cross the finish line at 25:30.0.   They were both awarded plaques for their accomplishments.   Medals were distributed to first, second, and third place male & female winners in each age bracket.

What to Expect Race Day

0 KC Newsletter | News No Comments

What To Expect Race Day (Next Saturday, October 6th) St. John’s is a very vibrant parish, with lots of activities each week. Next Saturday will be no exception with the Knights Challenge 5k, TMIY, mass, and Polish School all occurring Saturday morning. We ask your cooperation with those directing traffic if you are coming to St. John’s for one of these activities or any other purpose on Saturday morning.

The race starts promptly at 8:30 AM in front of the old church (now the parish center) and terminates in the driveway between the church and school parking lots. Cars will only be allowed to park in the east portion of the church lot, the school parking lot, and the Park Place lot during race time. Park Blvd. is still under construction, so the only entrance to the church lot will be the south one. We are still working out drop-off and access for the lots with the parish and Streamwood Police, who along with the Hanover Township Community officers and Streamwood Fire Department, will be on hand to assure safety for all.

Registration continues this week online (5k.kofc12801.org/register) and at the parish office. This is the preferred method for registration, so that we can have your race packet made up ahead of time. Race morning is pretty hectic with everyone arriving between 7 AM and 8 AM. There will be sponsor’s tables setup for you to browse before or after the race. We have received several in-kind donations, which will be raffled off during the event. Refreshments and water will be available. Awards will be distributed after the Kids Fun Dash, which is usually around 9:30 AM after all runners / walkers have crossed the finish line.

We’d like to thank all our sponsors and those that have registered. With a bit more participation, we should meet our goal to provide several thousand dollars to Hanover Township Food Pantry.  For more information about What to Expect on Race Day (click here)
