In the 1800’s when the Knights of Columbus was founded, times were very similar to what they are this year. Immigrants came from Europe by boat and settled in the Northeast. In particular, they landed in New Haven, CT. They came hoping for a better life, but instead they were met with hard times. A pandemic was in full swing, men were losing their jobs, many became ill and died. Families were struggling to put food on the table after the loss of the bread winner.

Father Michael J. McGivney, an Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s in New Haven, met in the basement of the church with a dozen men. They passed the hat and were able to come up with funds to help the families that were coming to him for help. What started out as a few dollars given to the widow grew to a sum of $500 which would provide food and shelter for two or three years. This was important because if the widow couldn’t demonstrate she could support the family, the state would step in and remove the children from the home, making them wards of the state. Since there was a dislike for Catholics, they’d be put into non-Catholic homes breaking up the family. This was the humble beginnings of the Knights of Columbus.

Fast Forward to Today

In 2020 there are families struggling to put food on the table. Hanover Township Food Pantry has always been there to help families and Mary’s Millennium Knights of Columbus has been there along side them for years, helping to raise funds which keeps food on their shelves. For the past six years we’ve held an annual Knights Challenge 5K the first weekend in October. Like Father McGivney, we had a Brother Knight with a dream. We wanted to increase our donations to the food pantry. He loved to run in 5K’s, so he volunteered to organize our first event. Since that time, we have given thousands of dollars to the food pantry with the help of our sponsors and participants.

This year, we are unable to hold a physical event due to these unprecedented circumstances. How will these families in need get the food on their tables if we aren’t able to provide the funds to Hanover Township Food Pantry? Who will step forward to provide if we can’t?

Runners Can Help

Are you a runner? Are you still trying to get some running in during the pandemic? Have you run in 5K events in the past and are missing that this year? Do you like competitions? Do you just run for fun? Are you exercising on your treadmill? No matter how you answered these questions, you can put your running to good use. Register for our event and run any time and any place between now and October 2nd. (Our event would have been held on October 3rd). After your run, you can upload your results to our website, should you wish to be entered into the competition part of the race.

Walkers Can Help

Do you like going for a walk? Staying active is important, even in a pandemic. You don’t have to walk any particular length to participate in our virtual event. Just register and walk any time and any place. Go for a stroll in your neighborhood or anywhere else. If you walk the 5K (like so many of our past participants have done) you can upload your results and we’ll reward the top participants with medals.

Everyone Can Help

How can I help – I don’t run or go for walks? Help us fill our Virtual Hat. Donations can be made on our dedicated race page or you can mail a check to us to avoid online credit card processing fees. See our donation page for complete details.   If you own a business, we are still looking for additional Sponsors.

Besides giving a donation, we need help getting the information out about this critical need for the food pantry. Help us by sharing one of our Facebook or Twitter posts with your contacts.

Dreams Can Become Reality

Father Michael J. McGivney’s dream which started with 12 men in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, has grown into an organization with 2 Million members in 17,000 local councils, contributing $187.6M with 77M volunteer hours (valued independently at $1.9B). Our dream is to be able to meet our $5000 goal for the Hanover Township Food Pantry.

Just like those families were counting on Father McGivney for support, the needy of Hanover Township are counting on us.

Thank you for your Support

Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, CT, founded the Knights of Columbus, in 1882, as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.  The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families.

Times haven’t changed much since 1882.  There are still families in need, and the Knights of Columbus is there to render assistance.   We have partnered with Hanover Township Food Pantry for many years to help provide food to families in need.  This is our 7th Annual Knights Challenge 5K, which benefits the food pantry directly. On October 3rd, runners, walkers, and school-age kids will assemble at St. John’s Parish Center to help us in our quest to Feed His Sheep.   Registration is open online.  Special Promotion:    Now through September 5th, use code “LTRto save 10% per runner / walker (individual, student, family).   Why not form a team and register using the family pricing?  We will take walk-in registrations the day of the race, but the prices will increase.    Registration early will be important so that we can plan any changes to accommodate social distancing requirements.   This year we’ve added a Virtual 5K Run / Walk which you can complete any time on your own prior to October 3rd.

Hanover Township Food Pantry helps more than 700 families each month.  Keeping their shelves full is always a struggle, but by generous support from the community, they are able to continue their mission of caring for those families.  Through your generosity, by sponsoring, participating in the Knights Challenge, or making a monetary donation, Mary’s Millennium Council is able to continue playing our role in serving the community.

Kids Fun Dash

Fun for the Whole Family

One of the Knights of Columbus core principles is Charity.    Children learn by example, so what better way to instill charitable giving, then to feed the hungry of Hanover Township by participating in the Knights Challenge as a Family.

Back by Popular Demand This Year

Two years ago we expanded the Knights Challenge Run / Walk to include age appropriate events, including a Kids Fun Dash for children ages 3-10.   At the conclusion of the 5K Run / Walk main event (approximately 9:30 AM), registered Kiddies will have their very own race for fun.   The race will start in the parking lot and end at the same finish line as the 5K race. This was a huge success last year and we anticipate another great event for our 5th Annual Knights Challenge.

We are once again offering discounted Family (3 or more participants registering together) and Student (18 and under) pricing options, so that more families and youths can participate this year.

Register now to guarantee your official Kids Fun Dash race shirt, #1 race bib, ribbon award, sticker, and other special treats. Goodies only guaranteed for preregistered participants.

Last year’s Knights Challenge may be completed, but the need to feed hungry of Hanover Township remains.   For many years, Mary’s Millennium has made the Hanover Township Food Pantry one of their primary charitable causes.   Six years ago, we introduced the Knights Challenge 5k in order to step up our ability to support this worthy cause.   Through the help of many participants and sponsors, we have been able to donate thousands of dollars to the food pantry.   There is still much more to be done to feed the hungry.

Why We Host Knights Challenge 5K

The picture above was taken at St. John the Evangelist parking lot on July 2nd. That morning, Hanover Township Food Pantry was onsite with a mobile food truck to distribute food to needy families. This was made possible by donations from the Ladies Auxiliary of Mary’s Millennium Knights of Columbus. Several members of the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary joined forces with Hanover Township and other volunteers to distribute the food to 90 families.

This was an extra event for those families. The food pantry feeds over 700 families each month. Cash donations go a long way to restock shelves and make mobile truck distribution events like this possible. The pantry is able to purchase food for pennies on the dollar.

We need Your Help!  Sign up today to run or walk in our 6th Annual Knights Challenge.  There are discounted rates for families, students, and teams.  Ask your coworkers, family, and friends to sponsor your participation as well.  Together we can feed the hungry of Hanover Township.

What to Expect Race Day

What To Expect Race Day (Next Saturday, October 6th) St. John’s is a very vibrant parish, with lots of activities each week. Next Saturday will be no exception with the Knights Challenge 5k, TMIY, mass, and Polish School all occurring Saturday morning. We ask your cooperation with those directing traffic if you are coming to St. John’s for one of these activities or any other purpose on Saturday morning.

The race starts promptly at 8:30 AM in front of the old church (now the parish center) and terminates in the driveway between the church and school parking lots. Cars will only be allowed to park in the east portion of the church lot, the school parking lot, and the Park Place lot during race time. Park Blvd. is still under construction, so the only entrance to the church lot will be the south one. We are still working out drop-off and access for the lots with the parish and Streamwood Police, who along with the Hanover Township Community officers and Streamwood Fire Department, will be on hand to assure safety for all.

Registration continues this week online (5k.kofc12801.org/register) and at the parish office. This is the preferred method for registration, so that we can have your race packet made up ahead of time. Race morning is pretty hectic with everyone arriving between 7 AM and 8 AM. There will be sponsor’s tables setup for you to browse before or after the race. We have received several in-kind donations, which will be raffled off during the event. Refreshments and water will be available. Awards will be distributed after the Kids Fun Dash, which is usually around 9:30 AM after all runners / walkers have crossed the finish line.

We’d like to thank all our sponsors and those that have registered. With a bit more participation, we should meet our goal to provide several thousand dollars to Hanover Township Food Pantry.  For more information about What to Expect on Race Day (click here)

It’s More Fun Than Running / Walking Alone !

Thank you for considering running or walking in our Knights Challenge 5k.   We hope that you will have fun while helping us raise funds for our very worthwhile cause – feeding the hungry of Hanover Township.

We want you to have the most fun on race day, so we’ve introduced Teams this year so that you can partner with family, friends, or co-workers to cheer each other on to the finish line.  Running with a friend (or a group!) really is so much more fun than running alone. When you register, or anytime after that, you can create a team on our registration site.

Once the race is over, a team is there to celebrate, and relax after the accomplishments of the day. Plus, they’ll keep people going and motivate them to finish strong if they’re starting to feel sluggish mid-race.

Need Encouragement ?

Before the race even starts, a team is a built-in training support system. A dedicated team will spend some time running together before the race starts, getting to know each member’s quirks and pace. An individual can push off or ignore scheduled training runs, but a team won’t let them get away with skipping them! Besides support, team members also make for great accountability partners, and will help members to be completely prepared come race day.

Share Team Page to Get Pledges

This year besides awarding an overall male and female winner along with first, second, and third place finishers in each age category (male & female) we will be awarding a prize to the Team that raises the most donations.   It’s easy for you to raise pledges via our registration page.   Once you’ve registered, anyone can donate to support either an individual or a team.

As a team, you’ll be able to customize your own page – upload an image, set a goal, and track your progress.   Share that link on social media, via email, or simply pass it along on a flyer, to gain support for your team.   You can create your own t-shirts if you like (we can provide you with logo if you want to incorporate that into your design).   Together we can make this year’s Knights Challenge the largest to date.  If you need any help forming a team just contact us at info@kofc12801.org.
