2018 Overall Winners

And The Winners Are …

The Needy Families of Hanover Township serviced by the Food Pantry month after month thanks to donations of food and money.   Mary’s Millennium Council has been a proud sponsor of the Food Pantry for years.   Five years ago, we decided to step up our game and invited the community to assist us by participating in the annual Knights Challenge 5k Run / Walk / Kids Fun Dash.  Year after year, runners and walkers have come from near and far to join us in our quest to help stamp out hunger.   Once again, the public did not disappoint us.

God was shining down on our race today.  When we started marking the course this morning, there were showers in the area, but by race time, the skies had cleared and the rains had stopped.  As the race progressed, the skies turned cloudy, but still no rain.  It was a comfortable temperature, but a bit humid.   No worries, we had plenty of water on hand and of course the Streamwood Fire Department was standing by in case anyone needed assistance.  Fortunately they sat idle the whole time.

At the conclusion of the main race, several youngsters participated in the Kids Fun Dash.  This is the second year we’ve done that dash and we hope that word spreads so that more kids participate next year.  They have a great time and take home a t-shirt and ribbon to show their support for the Hanover Township Food Pantry.

Pictured above are the overall male and female winners from this year’s event.   Our own Brother Knight Dan Klein led the males, crossing the finish line at 22:13.5, and Colleen Clessen was the first female to cross the finish line at 25:30.0.   They were both awarded plaques for their accomplishments.   Medals were distributed to first, second, and third place male & female winners in each age bracket.

What to Expect Race Day

0 KC Newsletter | News No Comments

What To Expect Race Day (Next Saturday, October 6th) St. John’s is a very vibrant parish, with lots of activities each week. Next Saturday will be no exception with the Knights Challenge 5k, TMIY, mass, and Polish School all occurring Saturday morning. We ask your cooperation with those directing traffic if you are coming to St. John’s for one of these activities or any other purpose on Saturday morning.

The race starts promptly at 8:30 AM in front of the old church (now the parish center) and terminates in the driveway between the church and school parking lots. Cars will only be allowed to park in the east portion of the church lot, the school parking lot, and the Park Place lot during race time. Park Blvd. is still under construction, so the only entrance to the church lot will be the south one. We are still working out drop-off and access for the lots with the parish and Streamwood Police, who along with the Hanover Township Community officers and Streamwood Fire Department, will be on hand to assure safety for all.

Registration continues this week online (5k.kofc12801.org/register) and at the parish office. This is the preferred method for registration, so that we can have your race packet made up ahead of time. Race morning is pretty hectic with everyone arriving between 7 AM and 8 AM. There will be sponsor’s tables setup for you to browse before or after the race. We have received several in-kind donations, which will be raffled off during the event. Refreshments and water will be available. Awards will be distributed after the Kids Fun Dash, which is usually around 9:30 AM after all runners / walkers have crossed the finish line.

We’d like to thank all our sponsors and those that have registered. With a bit more participation, we should meet our goal to provide several thousand dollars to Hanover Township Food Pantry.  For more information about What to Expect on Race Day (click here)

Final Prep 2018 Knights Challenge

Register Online Through October 3rd

Five years ago Mary’s Millennium Council #12801 Knights of Columbus, Streamwood, IL, was looking for a creative way to increase their yearly assistance to the Hanover Township Food Pantry.  Jim Kaltinger, an avid runner, approached the council with his idea about conducting a 5K race.   As an avid runner, he knew something about what was involved, but that challenge didn’t stop him from suggesting we sponsor an event.  The council approved the idea overwhelmingly and we embarked on a journey which culminated in October 2014 with a successful event.

Final preparations are underway for the fifth annual Knights Challenge 5K Run/Walk which will be held October 6, 2018, starting at 8:30 AM.  The event, sponsored by the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary in conjunction with St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish, located at 300 N. Park Blvd., Streamwood, benefits the Hanover Township Food Pantry.   The race course is USATF certified #IL-14131-JW.

We’ve expanded last year, including a Kids Fun Dash for children ages 3-10.   At the conclusion of the main event (approximately 9:30 AM), registered Kiddies will have their very own race for fun.   The race will start in the parking lot and end at the same finish line as the 5K race.   All children will receive a special t-shirt and participation ribbon.  Refreshments and awards will follow the events.

Medals will be presented to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female winners in each five year age category. In addition, the overall male and female winners will also receive special awards.   A technical T-shirt will be given to all pre-registered participants.

We are still looking for runners / walkers and children for the Dash.  Do you know someone that likes to race?

Online registration is still open (click here).  Registrations are also being accepted by mail or in person at St. John’s Parish Office.  (Download Registration Form Here).  We will also take registration the day of the event from 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Parish Center.    There is special pricing for families of 3 or more, students, and Fun Dash participants.  Thank you for your support.

The Knights Challenge may be completed, but the need to feed hungry of Hanover Township remains.   For many years, Mary’s Millennium has made the Hanover Township Food Pantry one of their primary charitable causes.   Five years ago, we introduced the Knights Challenge 5k in order to step up our ability to support this worthy cause.   Through the help of many participants and sponsors, we have been able to donate thousands of dollars to the food pantry.   There is still much more to be done to feed the hungry.

It’s More Fun Than Running / Walking Alone !

Thank you for considering running or walking in our Knights Challenge 5k.   We hope that you will have fun while helping us raise funds for our very worthwhile cause – feeding the hungry of Hanover Township.

We want you to have the most fun on race day, so we’ve introduced Teams this year so that you can partner with family, friends, or co-workers to cheer each other on to the finish line.  Running with a friend (or a group!) really is so much more fun than running alone. When you register, or anytime after that, you can create a team on our registration site.

Once the race is over, a team is there to celebrate, and relax after the accomplishments of the day. Plus, they’ll keep people going and motivate them to finish strong if they’re starting to feel sluggish mid-race.

Need Encouragement ?

Before the race even starts, a team is a built-in training support system. A dedicated team will spend some time running together before the race starts, getting to know each member’s quirks and pace. An individual can push off or ignore scheduled training runs, but a team won’t let them get away with skipping them! Besides support, team members also make for great accountability partners, and will help members to be completely prepared come race day.

Share Team Page to Get Pledges

This year besides awarding an overall male and female winner along with first, second, and third place finishers in each age category (male & female) we will be awarding a prize to the Team that raises the most donations.   It’s easy for you to raise pledges via our registration page.   Once you’ve registered, anyone can donate to support either an individual or a team.

As a team, you’ll be able to customize your own page – upload an image, set a goal, and track your progress.   Share that link on social media, via email, or simply pass it along on a flyer, to gain support for your team.   You can create your own t-shirts if you like (we can provide you with logo if you want to incorporate that into your design).   Together we can make this year’s Knights Challenge the largest to date.  If you need any help forming a team just contact us at info@kofc12801.org.

Kids Fun Dash 2018

Kids Fun Dash

Fun for the Whole Family

One of the Knights of Columbus core principles is Charity.    Children learn by example, so what better way to instill charitable giving, then to feed the hungry of Hanover Township by participating in the Knights Challenge as a Family.

Back by Popular Demand This Year

Last year we expanded the Knights Challenge Run / Walk to include age appropriate events, including a Kids Fun Dash for children ages 3-10.   At the conclusion of the 5K Run / Walk main event (approximately 9:30 AM), registered Kiddies will have their very own race for fun.   The race will start in the parking lot and end at the same finish line as the 5K race. This was a huge success last year and we anticipate another great event for our 5th Annual Knights Challenge.

We are once again offering discounted Family (3 or more participants registering together) and Student (18 and under) pricing options, so that more families and youths can participate this year.

Register now to guarantee your official Kids Fun Dash race shirt, #1 race bib, ribbon award, sticker, and other special treats. Goodies only guaranteed for preregistered participants.

Food Distribution June 26, 2018  (click for more photos)

Hanover Township Food Pantry Food Distribution

If you’ve run or walked in past Knights Challenge 5k events, you might recognize this parking lot.  It is St. John the Evangelist’s parking lot.   Hanover Township Food Pantry, in conjunction with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, was at St. Johns on June 26th distributing food to needy right in our own neighborhood.   Several of the Knights of Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary were on hand to help with the distribution.  There were 75 families that received food at this distribution.

This is Why we Host the Knights Challenge 5k

The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

Times haven’t changed  much since 1882.  There are still families in need, and the Knights of Columbus is there to render assistance.   We have partnered with Hanover Township Food Pantry for many years to help provide food to families in need.  This is our 5th Annual Knights Challenge 5K which benefits the food pantry directly.
