Race Day Reflections

Fourth Annual Knights Challenge is History

After weeks of gorgeous weekends, with above normal temperatures, the day before the race brought rain to the area.  As Saturday morning dawned, organizers of the Knights Challenge anxiously looked out their windows to see if it was raining.  Fortunately, it was not.  The skies were overcast, and there were typical fall temperatures, but the weather forecast had been updated with heavy rain no longer anticipated until perhaps later in the afternoon.

As the first runners showed up at St. John’s Parish Center to sign-in, the sun was actually starting to peak out from behind the clouds.   Everyone sighed in relief, as we now expected the last minute onsite registrations would actually come to fruition.

By race time we had 50 runners / walkers present – there are always some participants that preregister that are unable to actually attend the event.  There was a gentle breeze blowing, and the mix of clouds and sun produced close to perfect conditions for participants.  About half-way through the race, there were a couple periods of light misting, but for the most part, conditions couldn’t have been better.  God must have been shining down on all for the work being done to feed the hungry.

Brother Knight Dan Klein was the first male runner to cross the finish line at 20:45.6.  Colleen Clesen, from St. Charles, was the first female to cross the finish line at 24:40.2.    Congratulations to both of them for winning the overall trophies.

We’d like to thank all the Sponsors, Volunteers, and Participants for making our 4th annual 5K a success.   There are too many people to thank in this article, but we will devote another post to that topic.   For those that participated, watch our website, twitter feed, and Facebook page for updates.   The official results will be posted by Race Time, but if you can’t wait for those to be on their site, contact us with your name and/or bib number and we can provide you with your results.

We will be posting pictures from the race as well as more details about race day.  Sign up for our newsletter if you would like to receive updates.   We hope that you enjoyed this year’s Knights Challenge and that you’ll be back next year, perhaps with a friend or family member.  Together we have supported a worthy cause, the Hanover Township Food Pantry, who would also like to express their appreciation.

Thank you to all - click for more details

The Knights Challenge may be completed, but the need to feed hungry of Hanover Township remains.   For many years, Mary’s Millennium has made the Hanover Township Food Pantry one of their primary charitable causes.   Four years ago, we introduced the Knights Challenge 5k in order to step up our ability to support this worthy cause.   Through the help of many participants and sponsors, we have been able to donate thousands of dollars to the food pantry.   There is still much more to be done to feed the hungry.

Streamwood Knights of Columbus

Host 4th Annual 5K Oct. 7th

Race Director, Jim Kaltinger, crossing the finish line in 2016 Knights Challenge 5K – St. John the Evangelist Church, Streamwood, IL. 8/27/16 Gary Pappin

Four years ago Mary’s Millennium Council #12801 Knights of Columbus, Streamwood, IL, was looking for a creative way to increase their yearly assistance to the Hanover Township Food Pantry.  Jim Kaltinger, an avid runner, approached the council with his idea about conducting a 5K race.   As an avid runner, he knew something about what was involved, but that challenge didn’t stop him from suggesting we sponsor an event.  The council approved the idea overwhelmingly and we embarked on a journey which culminated in October 2014 with a successful event.

Final preparations are underway for the fourth annual Knights Challenge 5K Run/Walk which will be held October 7, 2017, starting at 8:30 AM.  The event, sponsored by the Knights and Ladies Auxiliary in conjunction with St. John the Evangelist Catholic Parish, located at 300 N. Park Blvd., Streamwood, benefits the Hanover Township Food Pantry.   The race course is USATF certified #IL-14131-JW.

We’ve expanded this year, including a Kids Fun Dash for children ages 3-10.   At the conclusion of the main event (approximately 9:30 AM), registered Kiddies will have their very own race for fun.   The race will start in the parking lot and end at the same finish line as the 5K race.   All children will receive a special t-shirt and participation ribbon.  Refreshments and awards will follow the events.

Medals will be presented to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female winners in each five year age category. In addition, the overall male and female winners will also receive special awards.   A technical T-shirt will be given to all participants.

We are still looking for runners / walkers and children for the Dash.  Do you know someone that likes to race?  For more information, see our dedicated website ( http://5k.kofc12801.org ), Facebook page (KnightsChallenge5K), email us at info@kofc12801.org or, leave a message at the parish office.

Online registration is open via the “Register” link on our race website.  We will also take registration the day of the event from 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Parish Center.    There is special pricing for families of 3 or more, students, and Fun Dash participants.  Thank you for your support.

To learn more about what we do, visit our Knights & Ladies website (www.kofc12801.org).  You can also leave a message at the parish office, 630-837-6500.  Visit us on Facebook (facebook.kofc12801.org).

Kids Fun Dash

Fun for the Whole Family

One of the Knights of Columbus core principles is Charity.    Children learn by example, so what better way to instill charitable giving, then to feed the hungry of Hanover Township by participating in the Knights Challenge as a Family.

We’ve expanded the Knights Challenge Run / Walk to include age appropriate events, including a Kids Fun Dash for children ages 3-10.   At the conclusion of the 5K Run / Walk main event (approximately 9:30 AM), registered Kiddies will have their very own race for fun.   The race will start in the parking lot and end at the same finish line as the 5K race.

We also have introduced Family (3 or more participants registering together) and Student (18 and under) pricing options, so that more families and youths can participate this year.

Register now to guarantee your official Kids Fun Dash race shirt, #1 race bib, ribbon award, sticker, and other special treats. Goodies only guaranteed for preregistered participants.

Starting the Race

We experimented with the 2016 Knights Challenge 5k Race / Walk, holding the race in August in conjunction with St. John’s Parish Picnic.   This year, we decided to go back to our roots, and hold the race in the fall.   We’ve set the date of October 7th for our fourth annual event.   We still need to lock in the date with the village, parish, and our timing company.  As soon as we have a firm date, we’ll open the online registration.  Meanwhile, save the date and pass the word to family and friends.

The tall racer in the green shirt in this image is none other than last year’s Race Director, Jim Kaltinger.   He loves running in 5K’s, so this year he’s turned the reins over to our past Grand Knight, Bill Henderson.   Jim will still be around to make sure this year’s race runs smoothly.

Since we had some extra time, we decided to build a brand new website for this year’s race.   Besides including all the information for this year’s race, we’ve also included the results from the three past years.   Browse the stories from the past races and check out the many images from race day.

Thank you to all that have sponsored and participated in the first three 5K events.   Please join us again this year to help us continue our mission of feeding the hungry of Hanover Township.

Joy of Crossing the Finish Line

There are many emotions on race day.  Shown here is one of our Ladies Auxiliary members, Monica, just as she crossed the finish line.   You can be as competitive as you want to.  It doesn’t matter if you are the first or last to cross the line, in our minds, you are all winners because you are racing for an excellent cause.   Thanks to our sponsors and all the participants, we have been able to donate thousands of dollars to the Hanover Township Food Pantry since our inaugural race.   We hope to be able to continue that trend this year.

This event takes a lot of preparation and help, especially on race day.   If you are interested in running, walking or volunteering, please use the contact form, and we’ll be happy to keep you informed as our planning continues.
